Learn to Fly

Learn to Fly

Back day all the way!  Teresa showed up less than feeling well but her drive to not give up is awe inspiring and speaks to who I am.

I could tell she was not feeling herself – her shine wasn’t as prominent, she was missing her bounce. Just was a little more quiet than her normal spunky self.

Even though she was not feeling too hot, she showed up, she set up my workout, she set up my routine and kept me on target. It was also a time for me to see how much I could do without constant push. We alternated exercises and we kept our own rep count as we went through the sequence of workout.

So it was up to me to keep myself motivated and pushing forward.  When your partner falls flat, you have to be willing to dig deep inside yourself and keep pushing. You have to do that for you. You also have to support your workout partner. You have to support them for who they are and accept that they are going to have days that are not on as they normally are and its OK because you will be there to.

I pushed hard as hard as I could. I had her voice in the back of my mind. I adjusted the weight accordingly. I pushed for a higher rep count, I tried to hit an ‘almost failure’ standpoint.  I tried to not think about the reps. I did not focus on the weight.

I trained as if Teresa was on top of my workout, pushing me, in front of my face.

The fact is, when you want to improve, when you want to strive for something awesome, you have to dig into yourself and become self sufficient.

I love having a training mentor. Just love it but I equally need to learn how to get up and do it all myself.

It’s almost like the Biggest Loser. It’s all fantastic that contestants lose all the weight and get all trim and slim (although I truly question the safety and the healthiness of how they eat and train) during their show but there is an alarming number of contestants that go back to old ways and end up going back to their old habits, gaining some if not all of their weight loss back.

Why? First, we don’t make it habit ; Second, we don’t internalize it (learn to fly on our own!); Third, we don’t make it a lifestyle (I hate the word diet! Develop a healthy lifestyle that is sustainable for you). Fourth and maybe most importantly, we have to fix our insides and figure out why we just continue to self sabotage ourselves and figure out how to make it different.

I think we go about dieting all wrong. I think we go about weight loss all wrong (in general) and we are looking to fads and quick fix and hope to be our solution. I’m sorry, i just don’t buy any of the fads and if you for a second think I don’t know what it feels like to try everything, you are wrong.

Believe me when I tell you that the only thing out there to strive for is to move a little more and balance your eating so that you are eating variety, packed with nutrition that will support your daily activity levels. Real food, real activity.  Just commit to the real no hype way of living and trust me, days become months and months become years and then you look back and realize how much you have accomplished and be proud of that!
