Tuesday Fave! – Walking Lunge

Walking Lunge

Over the next week I will spotlight my favorite workout exercise of the day! I have learnt so much through Teresa Bragado, I feel its about time to switch up my daily blog and begin to share some of my daily exercises and pick the one I love (or have a love-hate relationship with!) and share it with you all!

Today! I’m highlighting the Walking Lunge

Exercise Type – Strength

Muscles Worked – Quadriceps

Secondary Muscles Worked – Calves, Glutes, Hamstrings, Core

Equipment : None or large plates, barbells, dumbbells (there are many variations of this exercise)

Type of Exercise : Compound Movement

Level : Beginner and you can easily modify it for intermediate and advanced movements

The How-To : Beginner

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and your hands on your hips.
  2. Step forward with one leg, flexing the knees to drop your hips. Descend until your rear knee nearly touches the ground. Your posture should remain upright, and your front knee should stay above the front foot.
  3. Push through the heel of the foot in front of you and extend your knees to raise yourself back up.
  4. Step forward with your rear foot, and repeat the lunge motion with the opposite leg

Why I like this movement?

  • It raises your heart rate (especially when you modify it)
  • It causes a tremendous amount of leg burn
  • There is always a way to make it harder, increase the level of sophistication
  • You equally work your core when you add a plate above your head. Your body must compensate for the plate, stabilize itself in order to perform the exercise properly

Modifications include : Barbell walking lunge, Overhead plate walking lunge, Dumbbell Walking Lunge

Jenn at Do You Bake? Walking Lunge

Until tomorrow! — I’ll leave you with one of my favorite variations! Barbell walking lunges are a great intermediate-advanced modification. Start with a lower barbell weight and slowly increase it as your stability and strength increases.

Hugs and Love,
