High Cable Rows with Bar

cable rows - high cable rows

My new training regime means new exercises. In order to continue to see progress, you not only need to focus on constantly altering and monitoring your nutrition but you need to be pretty aware when your body is getting used to the same stressors or exercises you are putting it through.  Once your body is used to the exercise, you either have to progressively overload the muscles through increased weight and other techniques or you need to look at adding in additional exercises that will cause your body and muscles to move in different ways.  I am getting stronger but its harder for me to consistently go up in weight so I have to look for new ways to challenge my body.

Today I applied a new exercise to my back workout. The high cable row, using bar.  This requires a lot of different things

  • Must keep your core tight so you don’t move around on the mat, allows you to maintain proper form and control as you pull the bar down towards your sides
  • Must focus on squeezing your lats as you bring the bar down to your side
  • Must focus on keeping your arms straight in order to apply contraction to both your lats and your middle back
  • Must focus on a full range of motion in order to challenge the muscles as much as you can

I performed this exercise at 70 pounds. By looking at the photos and video, you can see my lats contracting as I sweep the bar towards me.

Part of what I need to do to balance the shape of my body is focus on building the V-taper and adding emphasis to my lats will help me do so. This was a fun and different exercise to incorporate. It keeps my workouts fresh and my body guessing.

There are several different variations to this type of high pull with cables and as the weeks go on, I will plan to incorporate them into my routine to continue to keep my workouts fresh.

Above all, I just have fun doing it!

Here is a quick video clip on the high cable row with bar
